"From the age of 14 to 35 I was an office clerk, at which
time I decided to immigrate to Canada. In life, there is always
that which we do for the sake convenience and money, and the other
we would like to do, but, for any number of reasons, the opportunity
just does not seem come about.
In those days Portugal was not what it is today and there weren't
the possibilities that there are now. But let us not dwell on
the past. I arrived in Canada, a totally different country, equipped
with the creative spirit that has always made me see in everything
and everybody an opportunity of a free future. A few days after
arrival, I found myself a job in a tent and boat sail factory
manufactured. Although I very much enjoy camping, this was not
the job I had envisioned in Canada. Later, there were new opportunities.
First, I went to school to perfect my English. Then back to school
for a course in Hair Styling. After thirteen years I was obliged
to leave this art form for health reasons. As I had to come up
with some form of earning a living, I started to attend various
schools, all of them related to art. So it was that at Diamond
Display I completed a course in Window display, that is to say
window dressing; at the George Brown College of Applied Arts and
Technology - that of Colour Coordinator, related to Fashion and
Grading Tech for Apparel Industry.
It was only in 1985 that painting once again started to take
up some of my leisure time. I produced several works, without
any formal training, but nonetheless, I tried to transmit on canvas
what I had learned from life. Many visits to Art Galleries and
whatever life brought my way every day. I then decided to enroll
at an Art School and in 1987 I held my first exhibition at the
Portuguese Consulate in Toronto.
It was a great adventure and good experience, for I was finally
fulfilling I dream I had had since I was very young. Since then
I have taken part in several individual and collective exhibitions.
Nowadays, Toronto is a city full of Portuguese Clubs and Cultural
Centres, where my work is appreciated and where I have many friends.
But I never forget the family and friends I left behind in Portugal,
and my roots are Portuguese and *Barreirense.
I like to occupy my time with my family, my grandchildren and
friends. But also with Poetry, Painting, Stained Glass, Ceramics,
Interior Decoration and Fashion. And anything related to Art.
I love to go away on vacation, seawater and sun, lots of sun,
the sun of very own **Arrabida, that I will never forget and continues
to be so much part of my life. If anyone wishes to know more about
me feel please free to ask and I shall answer to best of my ability.
Greetings
Luis Palaio"
