"FESTA" IN COLLEGE STREET
(Summer 2003)

This is exactly what transpired this past July
13 and 14. Thousands gathered on College Street on the stretch between
Shaw St. and Manning St., known to West End locals as "Little
Italy" to enjoy non-stop performances by bands and groups who
delighted the revellers with the sounds of jazz, rock and roll,
salsa and the tarentela (a regional Italian musical genre).

The many outdoor patios were jam packed with people,
it being extremely difficult to find a seat. This part of town,
used to, in past years, be inhabited for the most by people of Italian
origin, which led to City Council officially designating it "Little
Italy". Today, with the arrival in the area of the Portuguese,
Greek, Chinese, Vietnamese, Canadians and other ethnic groups, it
is more cosmopolitan reflecting the cultural mosaic that is Toronto,
one of the world's most popular cities where a diverse population
coexists in harmony and fraternity.
