street festivities and popular community marches are organized.
On Saint Anthony's night, each district presents its march in
a competition parade along the city's main avenue. This film follows
one family from the Bica neighbourhood during the preparation
and rehearsals for the parade through the point of view of its
various members. The expectation grows: will Bica neighbourhood
win this year's March?

encontros à esquina até à chegada do momento

HARBOURFRONT CENTRE DANCE FROM JAPAN
Opening Feb. 14
Pappa Tarahumara, one of today’s most prolific
Japanese ensembles, embodies a blend of cultures and influences
in an attempt to achieve universality and transcend national borders.
Under the direction of Hiroshi Koike, Pappa Tarahumara brings
to Harbourfront Centre their stage spectacle, Ship in a View,
which uses the landscape of a town by the sea to create a magical
and delightful work. The event takes place from Tuesday, February
14 to Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 8 p.m. at the Premiere
Dance Theatre, 3rd floor, 207 Queens Quay West. Tickets
are $22-$38 and available through the Harbourfront Centre
Box Office at 416-973-4000. Public information
is also available at www.harbourfrontcentre.com.
Named after the gentle Tarahumara Indians of the Copper Canyon
area of Mexico and influenced by an Asian sense of time and motion,
this Japanese dance company combines the traditional Japanese
opera with modern dance and symbolism of Noh theatre. The dance
productions of this company work towards a liberation from meaning,
leaving its audience with the freedom of interpretation and imagination.
It incorporates a dynamic interplay of music, lighting, costumes
and other elements in its poetic performances.
In 1982, this imaginative company was founded by and continues
to be led by Hiroshi Koike, who has skillfully integrated his
talented troupe's dance, singing and acting skills to create widescreen
spectacles of surprise and delight.
Ship in a View depicts an isolated seaside town from the ‘60s
as it watches a ship come in, representing both a link between
the town and the outside and the impending confrontation with
the unfamiliar world beyond. Elaborate stage sets and lighting
creates a mesmerizing ambience, heightened through the abstraction
and chaotic activity of singing and dancing. Through the motif
of the ship, the performance illuminates on a deeper level, man’s
inherent, yet unfulfilled desire to escape.
Assistance graciously provided by The Japan Foundation,
Toronto.
