Crystal Pontes was born on February
10, 1983 in the town of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. This young
luso-canadian songstress, already a veteran in the Portuguese
community musical milieu despite her tender age, has always nurtured
a deep passion for music. The daughter of Portuguese immigrant
parents, she is extremely proud of the cultural legacy they have
handed down to her throughout the years, and which is very evident
in her music. Her father, Mario, from the Island of Terceira,
and her mother, born on the Island of Santa Maria in the Azores,
have always been very supportive and have done their best to encourage
her to promote and sing the Portuguese language.
Interested in music since infancy, Crystal later frequented ballet,
tap, and jazz dance classes for seven years at the Ziegfield School
of Dance, as well as voice and theatre classes at the Royal Conservatory.
Whilst still at school, she took part in theatre productions,
folkdance groups and Mardi Gras dances, always singing. She was
also a member of the musical band "Banda Lira de Fátima",
and has organized and performed fund-raisers for Cancer Research.
Crystal has given shows in some of the major Canadian cities
- Toronto, Thunder Bay, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria
and Winnipeg, in the United States (California and Rhode Island)
and the Azores, on the Islands of Terceira and Santa Maria. Worthy
of mention is the fact that this young performer has been billed
alongside numerous popular artists well-known in the community,
bands such as "Starlight", and "Os Panteras",
as well as singers Iran Costa, Fernando Correia Marques, Axel,
Nelia, Carmen Silva, Nilton Cesar, Lindomar Castilho and Shawn
Fernandes-Desman. The highlights of her young career include performances
for the President of The Republic of Portugal and the President
of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Crystal Pontes is equally
involved in Canadian anglophone musical circles.
Her first release, "A Dança do Lê Olá"
was launched on the market by the luso-canadian record label,
Henda Music & Vídeo Canada. Her second CD is currently
in the works.
