Porfírio Ribeiro: Vocalist

"Meu Grande Sonho"

Porfírio Ribeiro was born in Quinta da Amoreira, in the town of Barreiro on the outskirts of Lisbon. At a tender age, he discovered his voice and has since then dedicated himself to fado, a musical genre emblematic of Portugal and its people. The melodies he chooses to sing carry in themselves the memory of Popular Portuguese Music and at times of a more popular type of fado. However, the artist does not limit himself to the strains of commonplace nostalgia often connoted with that most Portuguese and unique sentiment "saudade". His music denotes a certain sadness and fatalism contrasting with his other more luminous and joyous side, establishing a balance in ambiance wherein resides the sophistication of his hybrid musical approach where fado and popular music intersect.

If nothing in his life had previously indicated his musical future as a singer, we now have to admit that Porfírio Ribeiro is coming into own stylistically. Whether singing to a musical track in playback or to the sound of a live guitar when singing fado, he possesses a gentle but feeling voice. Performing an interesting mix of traditional fado songs, popular melodies and his own compositions, Porfírio has always chosen the lyrics he lends his voice to with the utmost care as can be seen in the selection of songs for his latest CD.

Life is made up of series of coincidences and music came into Porfírio Ribeiro's life in a most unexpected manner. He has been a lover of fado since he was very young, which he tries to express fully and with intensity. Naturally shy, but never hiding his sensitivity, the word "fame" does not figure in Porfírio's vocabulary. He appreciates the simple things in life and is in constant touch with Nature. He wishes to carry on making more dreams come true as he did with his latest album, "Meu Grande Sonho". Porfírio tell us that his inspiration resides in the fact that we are all in this world to learn to communicate with one another and, above all to love fully. According to him we all possess some form of creativity, even when not being an artist as such. Reconciling work, family and show business, he tells us, is all a matter of learning how to manage one's time. He feels that there is a mechanism inside him that furbishes a kind of energy, believing that we all possess this inherent capacity of constant renewal within us. He seeks to co-ordinate his time in such a manner as to do the right thing at the right time. Life has yet a lot more to offer Porfírio Ribeiro for he is far too busy making dreams come true.
