SALOMÉ

Nunca pensei em morrer
Porque a morte não é certa
Antes que leve a crer
Que já morreu ao poeta
Poeta digo-o eu
E digo com altivez
E lembro a vossas mercês
Que noutro tempo passado
Era o primeiro para o fado
Disseram-no muita vez
...José da Beca, fado singer Salomé's
grandfather
Salomé was born in Nazaré,
a small fishing village on the coast of Portugal and immigrated
to Vancouver at the age of nine. Salomé, a fourth generation
fado singer is fueled by her desire to stay in touch with her
roots and continues to treasure the traditions and culture of
her native country.
Salomé has regularly been
involved in the Portuguese community as a musical performer. She
was crowned 1st runner up in the Global Star-Quest competition
as a winner/finalist from the Portuguese community. She was the
lead vocalist of the Vancouver based five piece band "Europa"
from 1998 to 2000. She was also very proud to be involved, along
with several talented Luso-Canadian musicians, in performing for
the President of Portugal, Dr. Jorge Sampaio (25th of May, 2001),
on the first stop of his official state visit to Canada.
Salomé recently completed
her most ambitious musical endeavor of her young career, the recording
of her first album entitled "Ecos de Poesia".
This album is notably different from other fado albums
as it is rich with modern instrumentation and rhythms. It is broad
stylistically with elements of Rhythm and Blues, Classical, Jazz
and Pop.
The album was released in the Summer of 2002,
receiving great acclaim from as far as Japan. "Ecos de
Poesia" has been licensed by the Portuguese record label
Ovação and is being distributed and sold
throughout Portugal. In October of 2002, Salomé promoted
her album in Portugal with the highlights being interviews and
performances on top Portuguese TV shows "Olá Portugal"
and "Studio 5". A video was produced for her
single "Que Deus Me Perdoe".
The album is also being distributed across Canada
and is available at most Canadian retail outlets. Salomé
intends to continue to push her album into new parts of the world
in the future and plans for a follow up album are in the works.
