Shedd: Alternative Rock Band

According to Webster's Dictionary, shed is defined as:

a small structure for shelter or storage; to pour out;
to cause to flow; to radiate; to cause to flow off; to cast off.

SHEDD is an alternative rock trio based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Initially formed in 1997, SHEDD has undergone a few line-up changes, with the current line-up remaining unchanged since 2000. Their music can best be described as fervent vocals over "edgy" guitar with solid bass and "kick-ass" drums.

Gerry Lemos, lead vocalist and guitarist, was a regular kid growing up in the small town of Bradford, Ontario. Growing up, he was always listening to music, singing along with the tunes - that is until Nirvana came along. The raw energy of the music stirred up feelings never felt before. He wanted to sing and play guitar.

In 1997, Gerry hooked up with two high-school buddies to form a band. He was still fairly new to the guitar, but he had the burning desire to perform. They practiced regularly in a shed in Gerry's back yard (hence the name SHEDD - the extra D added for style) and soon played their first gig at their high school. It was a great feeling to get up in front of people and perform your favourite songs, but Gerry wanted to do more than play cover tunes in a "garage band".

The next few years saw a couple of line-up changes. In 2000 with two new members, his cousin Fern Corvelo and friend John Bettencourt, SHEDD has come into its own with the five-song, independent release "It's all good" - a compilation of songs representative of the growing pains experienced by Gerry with the band and life in general.

Artists that have influenced SHEDD are: Nirvana, The Clash, Radio Head, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Sex Pistols, Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Rush. Individually, the trio's influences are all over the map. Gerry, vocals and guitars, keeps the spirit of Kurt Cobain alive in his song writing, with some Led Zeppelin and The Clash in the mix. On bass guitar and vocals, John blends nuances of Geddy Lee, Flea and Stanley Clarke into a unique style that is melodic yet rock solid. Fern, drums, percussion and vocals, borrows from such mentors as John Bonham and Ian Paice and fuses the non-traditional techniques of Terry Bozzio and Stewart Copeland to create a style that is all his own. Together, Gerry, Fern and John have created a synergy of sound that is unmistakably SHEDD.

The hard work and persistence is paying off - a loyal core following is emerging. SHEDD has also enjoyed success on mp3 (mp3.com/shedd), ranking 57 on the alternative chart. Live performances in Toronto include Lee's Palace, the 360 and the Q-Bar as well as Lava Lounge, The Long Weekend and Sharpshooters in Newmarket and other venues in and around Toronto and the hometown of Bradford. SHEDD has toured the islands of the Azores (Portugal) in the summers of 2001 and 2002. And to show they have a heart, they have headlined the Mark & Friends Charity gala in Bradford and have also shared the stage with Carole Pope at the Vita Nova Charity benefit. Recent television appearances include Rogers Cable 10 and LA-MI-RE on OMNI 1.

SHEDD is currently entertaining interest from various record labels and is presently in the studio finishing their first full-length CD. It is sure to push the boundaries of the alternative rock genre by infusing elements of power-pop, punk and funk. If "It's all good" is any indication, the second release from SHEDD will be worth the wait. Expect great things.
