“Tales from the Isle of Spice”
     by Richardo Keens-Douglas

Islands are fantastic worlds filled with mystery and beauty. As an immigrant from the islands of Azores, Portugal, I find myself entangled by the wonderful imagery that sparkles through the pages of “Tales from the Isle of Spice”, a collection of three stories by Richardo Keens-Douglas.
The smells of exotic fruits and spices emerge as the stories unfold. This is a small book for big minds. Moms and dads, boys and girls will enjoy “La Diablesse and the Baby”, “Freedom Child of the Sea” and the “Nutmeg Princess”.
These are simple tales with a fair amount of complexity, which makes them valuable and everlasting. Inspired by Keens-Dougla’s life in the Caribbean “Tales from the Isle of Spice” brings forward universal values such as friendship and trust, unconditional love and respect.
In our time, children are often dragged from a world of fantasy to deal with tragedy and fear. These are the circumstances of life that makes us humans and compassionate towards others and ourselves. With care and talent Keens Douglas’ stories are reminders of the beauty inside each individual no matter how far or different he or she is. Furthermore, it shows children the cultural diversity of this country making possible a future of wholeness
and gratitude.
Portuguese are an important part of that cultural diversity. The younger generation have departed from the cozy remains of the past to meet head-on the demands of a colorful society. “Tales from the Isle of Spice” is a wonderful Christmas gift for all.
